Oliver B. Merlyn Foundation helps community agency
Delivery of New AEDs Paves Way for Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Improve Cardiac Care

Corona Community Ambulance Corps, Inc. recently received a grant from the Oliver B. Merlyn Foundation in Victor, NY to purchase four new Phillips HeartStart FR2+ Automated External Defibrillators. The new defibrillators replaced units which have been in service for several years and meet the needs of CPR/AED protocol changes put in place by the American Heart Association, the New York State Department of Health’s Bureau of EMS, and the Regional EMS Council (REMSCO) of New York City. The grant was made possible through the assistance of Bethany Moore of Boundtree Medical and David Moretti, President of Corona Community Ambulance Corps.

The grant proposal was submitted to Mr. Thomas Kubiak of the Oliver B. Merlyn Foundation, who worked with Mr. Moretti to achieve a successful determination and issuance of the grant funds. New defibrillators were purchased from G.E. Pickering of Sea Cliff, NY. In addition to the defibrillators, event review software, data card reader, LifePak adapter, and ECG Assessment module with all the accessories were purchased. When combined they greatly improve the ability for our EMTs and Paramedics to provide cardiac care to patients in keeping with State and City protocols.

The Phillips Defibrillators were received and placed immediately into service by the agency. The overall sentiment from the 100% volunteer membership was overwhelming and greatly welcome. Recently, Corona Community Ambulance Corps was granted Limited ALS certification by the Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (REMAC) of New York City. Tying together our elevated service level with the new defibrillators, dramatically enhances the delivery of care the volunteer EMTs and Paramedics provide to the residents, businesses, and guests of Corona, Queens, NY.
